Do Weight Loss Fasts Work For Everyone?

By Erica Grant

Do weight loss fasts work for everyone or is this just the latest diet hype being sold by celebrities and companies who want to make a profit? These programs can be found in a number of versions. Some use lemon and pepper, others involve various combinations of fruit and vegetable juices. All of these programs generally encourage water and other fluids but they restrict or completely eliminate solid foods for some or all of the day and night.

Most medical professionals agree that a short period of fasting is not dangerous for most people, and it can jump start your diet so you get quick results and stay highly motivated. Following this type of plan for an extended period may not be a good idea in most situations though, and you should keep this routine up for a week maximum unless your physician advises differently. Most of the time even 2 or 3 days can have a drastic impact on how you look and feel.

Fasting can have plenty of benefits, such as helping you lose weight and making you healthier in general, so long as you do you not have any pre-existing medical conditions that would make that sort of plan to be risky to you. Any women who are pregnant or nursing should absolutely avoid this type of plan due to their increased need for calories and nutrients. If you have kidney disease, cancer, diabetes, liver function problems, or any other health issues then you should not start on any new type of weight loss plan or diet program without consulting your doctor first.

The experience that you have with this method can vary widely. Some people have no side effects and they do not tend to react poorly when solid foods are cut out for a few days. Others may have headaches, feel weak or have a lack of energy, and some may feel hungry constantly. There are some things that you can do if you want to continue fasting and you have any of these effects.

Lack of energy and feelings of fatigue are common issues when you restrict food intake. Try to avoid activities that require a lot of energy and movement at a high pace. This will help to conserve your strength for the activities that must get done. Drinking fluids such as water and green tea and juices can help you to stay more comfortable and fight away the hunger. Peppermint tea can help fight headaches and chamomile tea is efficient at helping you let go of stress and relax.
