Information on Microdermabrasion - Non Invasive Procedure

By Mats Sumellin

There is a method for rejuvenation of the skin that is gaining acceptance in recent years called microdermabrasion. It is an economical solution that is noninvasive and does not cause pain for the recipient. For people who don't wish to have more serious plastic surgery, or injections and laser options, this is a choice that makes sense.

Some of the benefits to be gained are to lessen age spot prominence, make rougher skin smoother, make lines and wrinkles less prominent, pores can be made less visible, all because of microdermabrasion. Collagen growth will be stimulated as skin creams can permeate deeper, and this will be something that makes the skin look brighter and more radiant.

Microdermabrasion is a powerful exfoliation performed with special equipment. This will result in the removal of dead skin cells that have accumulated on the top layer of the skin.

Crystal microdermabrasion equipment involves a hand held wand that sucks air inside of it, using a compressor. A vacuum is produced as the wand makes contact with a patient's skin. Dead skin cells are removed from the top layers of the skin as they collide with the aluminum oxide crystals. A separate tube on the wand simply sucks the air along with the dead skin cells and crystals into the machine.

Microdermabrasion is also done using a diamond-tip, no crystals are involved with this method, but vacuum technology is still applied. Similarly, a vacuum is used but this time, the diamond tip does the work of dislodging the dead skin cells. There are many different tips with various grades of roughness, chosen specifically for your skin type and condition. Diamond-tip microdermabrasion is less uncomfortable, but achieves the same results as crystal microdermabrasion. For a patient with sensitive skin, it makes more sense.

The skill of the treatment provider can improve upon the already significant effects of microdermabrasion. For skin that is rougher, more treatments will be required for the desired effect, and in most cases several treatments are necessary. How a patient responds to the initial treatment will help to direct the provider to complete a plan that will deliver the results needed with the correct amount of visits to achieve the expected effect. Patients in many cases are delighted after they see the effects that the first session brings, but for a comprehensive treatment for all skin concerns, more visits are usually necessary. For the treatments to provide long lasting results, every few months a session should be scheduled. Individuals who happen to have very sensitive skin can also benefit from this process, as the device can be set up in order to cater toward their specific skin type.

This is a safe, non-surgical, and highly demanded process, but it does not mean that side effects from microdermabrasion are not possible occasionally. As mentioned, the microdermabrasion treatment sandblasts the skin which will slightly traumatize it and create a reaction. Skin sensitivity sometimes occurs, along with minimal bruising and skin can be slightly red and tight feeling. This is normal and will only last several hours. Other side effects can be tiny skin abrasions and small bleeding spots. Anaesthetics are not necessary with microdermabrasion, no dangerous chemicals are involved on the sensitive skin on your face, and there are minimal risks involved. This process is considered to be very safe, especially when you compare it to chemical agents or laser processes.
