Chemical Peels for Treating Acne

By Marlene Ataine

Although for some it is mild with only a few pimples or "zits" occurring every so often, almost every teenager has suffered acne at some point. For other teenagers however, acne can be more severe, and give rise to spots called whiteheads, blackheads, or larger red, inflamed spots called cysts in more severe cases. These skin pimples, spots and cysts can change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone and severe acne can in some cases leave scarring.

Although acne does not pose any danger, it can result in scarring of the skin. Human skin has pores (tiny holes) which connect to oil glands located under the skin. The glands are connected to the pores via follicles - small canals. An oily liquid called sebum is produced in these glands. Dead skin cells are carried by the sebum through the follicles to the surface of the skin. From the follicle, out of the skin, a small hair grows. Oil accumulates under the skin when these follicles get blocked, resulting in pimples. During puberty, hormonal changes can cause excess oils in the skin, so acne is common in teenagers. However it is not just teenagers who suffer from acne, adults can also develop acne later on in life, which is called adult acne.

A hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones) is the cause of some adult acne. When both male and female hormones (estrogen) are imbalanced, it also results in a breakout. This can happen during a woman's pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause. Occasionally, some cosmetics or medications like corticosteroids can also cause acne to develop.

Chemical peels are a very good treatment for mild and moderate adult acne. A chemical peel exfoliates your skin; this removes dead skin cells which have clogged the pores, and cleanses the skin of the dirt. The formation of acne pimples and spots is reduced. Skin discolouration and uneven skin tone caused by acne may also be helped by chemical peels.

Chemical peels are a very cost effective option for acne treatment. They are also a very safe treatment for acne. The top layers of the skin are exfoliated and cleansed by superficial chemical skin peels that remove all the dead skin cells. A course of six peels is usually recommended, each performed at least one week apart. A reduction in the amount of acne breakouts will be noticeable, and skin texture will improve too.

For your chemical peel acne treatment, make sure to approach a credible skin care clinic. Before you have chemical peels to treat your acne, obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type by consulting a reputable clinic.
