Some Options Used In Drinking Water Filtration Systems

By Jordan Schmidt

Adequate and safe water is necessary for a healthy population. It keeps many diseases at bay and enhances productivity of a community. It can therefore not be overlooked for this shall hamper all social and economic progress of a people. No one desires such a thing and therefore everyone seeks to be on the safer side. At this point in time, it is worth noting that drinking water filtration systems have been erected so as to enhance safety and better health.

In the present times, all sources need verification through chemical assessment so as to be considered safe. Even what may appear clean might not be necessarily safe for consumption or food preparation. Indeed, minimal standards require that all sources be approved before any harvesting and use is initiated. Potentially harmful components as chemicals, heavy metals, fungi, bacteria and viruses need to be taken care of if present. Their effect could have a far reaching effect and should not be ignored.

Purification chain may take different approaches. This is dictated by various reasons for which quality is being improved. Filtration process is necessary so as to eliminate solid materials that can be filtered off as floating objects. Different sizes of gravel to fine sand are used to attain this goal. Better still, additional chemical use may be very necessary in improving water by eliminating suspended soil and other dirt. Additional mechanisms include boiling, distillation as well as chemical treatment.

When a barrier has been used to get rid of large floating or rather suspended objects, a filter process is initiated. First, large sized sand particles are employed. It is termed as rapid sand filtration. It is rapid because it allows a lot of fluid to sink through it within a short time. Despite the faster rate, it is very effective in trapping unwanted components. For continued effectiveness, it must be freed from trapped components time after time.

Other than rapid filters, slow filters are employed to eliminate even smaller impurities. Just like rapid system, sand is still the primary component in this option. However, small fine sand is used in this case. Unlike rapid system, it is slow and takes a lot of time to prepare adequate supply that can meet the needs of a community. Following this, it is usually situated in places with adequate space to provide large surface area.

Membrane filters are equally useful. They could be very useful in preparing water for drinking purpose. Better still, these membranes could also provide fluids needed for running engines and preparing foodstuff. One main challenge with this kind of filter is that it does not eliminate dissolved items including heavy metals like mercury.

Another possible unit suitable for achieving pure fluids is ultra filtration membrane polymers. They are effective and equally efficient. A little pressure is needed to drive component being filtered through the small micro pores. Only desired component is allowed to go through while others are retained. To make the process more effective and complete, ion exchange devices and or system is included.

Let all persons be safe. Safety is necessary for disease prevention. It is one way of reducing disease burden on a population.
