This Is What Exfoliation Means.

By Zulema Gelman

Exfoliating is a treatment where the dead cells on the surface of the skin are removed by abrading it with a sponge. You can exfoliate any area of your skin. When you exfoliate your skin, be sure to choose a product that is suitable to the condition of your face.

In some cases, when dry skin cells pile up, it's not even worth wasting your favourite cream, because you might as well be hydrating your dead cells, which makes absolutely no sense! What you should do is get rid of those dead cells in order to have your new skin cells available for you to hydrate and take all sorts of care of.

Normally, your skin replaces the dead cells with new cells every month. However, you can speed up the process by sloughing off old, dead cells. If the old, dead cells are not removed, it will block the sebaceous spores and developed blackheads.

Skin exfoliation involves removing the oldest dead cells from the outermost layer of skin. By getting rid of the less healthy cells, newer, clearer, healthy skin is exposed. Regular Exfoliation leaves skin looking and feeling smoother and softer. Remember, exfoliation is not just something for the face. There are tremendous benefits that come from exfoliating the body, especially the legs, elbows and feet.

Exfoliation Unclogs Pores - Over time, dead skin cells clog your pores, giving you a dry and dehydrated look that ages even the youngest of us. By removing the top layer, you are unclogging these pores. As a result, your skin appears to be more radiant (even after the first time).

More importantly, by unclogging the dirt, oil and makeup from your face, you are clearing the skin to absorb product more effectively. So, if you are the type that likes to purchase expensive facial creams, your product will work better after a good exfoliating facial scrub. Remember, it doesn't matter how much moisturizer you're putting on your face or body, if you're not exfoliating first, your lotion will be worthless.

Mechanical exfoliator is available in different varieties to suit different kinds of skin including, normal, oily, and dry skin. Popular varieties of mechanical exfoliator brands contains small crystalline particles is called microdermabrasion exfoliators.

Chemical exfoliators may contain salicylic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid, fruit enzymes. The most effective means of exfoliating are AHAs (products that contain alpha hydroxy acids) and BHAs (products that contain beta hydroxyl acids). There is actually only one BHA, and it is a famous salicylic acid. Glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, citric acid and tartaric acid are all considered AHAs.

Another type of exfoliator is the enzymatic exfoliator. Enzymatic exfoliator contains enzymes that will help to remove dead skin cells. Enzymatic exfoliator is suitable for dry, and thin skins as well as skins that suffered from acne. Enzymatic exfoliator is a handy exfoliator if your skin is not allergic to the type of enzyme used in the ingredient of the product.

How Often and Where Should I Exfoliate?

For normal skin, it is recommended that you exfoliate about twice a week. Depending on your skin, you may want to increase or decrease, but wait to see how your skin responds. Generally, if you are using a product that is too harsh, your skin can get overly dry, stripping away essential oils. Remember, even after a non-abrasive exfoliating product, always apply a soothing moisturizer.

The usual places to exfoliate include the face, legs and arms, but don't make the mistake of forgetting your neck, elbows, knees, feet, behind you ears etc. These places are often overlooked and can definitely benefit from a good exfoliating as well. Why exfoliate these parts of the body? Because skin in places other than the face tends to be drier due to fewer oil glands. Regular exfoliation of the body will help oils and creams absorb better into your skin, leaving you with a softer, more youthful appearance. Look for exfoliating products that are natural and easy to use. An exfoliating mitten make it super easy to reach smaller areas of your body, and as an added benefit, you control exactly how much pressure you apply, so you never get over-exfoliated.

Scrub the exfoliating cleanser on your skin in a circular motion. Be sure to be gentle in areas such as the neck and thigh. When you are done, rinse your skin thoroughly with clean water. If you have dry skin, you should follow up with a moisturizer because exfoliating will make your skin drier.
