Look Younger By Losing Those Frown Lines

By Dern Heatherton

Botox Cosmetic has for years retained the title as the most commonly performed "non-surgical" cosmetic procedure in the United States, based on its ease of use and consistently good cosmetic results.

The most common cosmetic use for Botox is the treatment of the frown lines between the eyebrows. When you inject the frown muscle with an adequate dose of Botox Cosmetic, it stops moving. As a result, the frown line diminishes. The frown lines are reduced because the muscle that cause the wrinkles to occur is not activating in the same pattern.

Again, the most common area of treatment with Botox is the frown line between the eyes. When Botox was approved by the FDA in 2002, the approval was based on the frown lines. In addition to the fact that frown lines are a major area of concern for patients is the fact that the market was driven by extremely high levels of satisfaction among patient end users. Botox smooths out the vertical lines between the brows. This gives patients a more refreshed and relaxed appearance. Some patients say it eliminates their "angry" look.

As common sense dictates, you should be in generally good physical health. As well, you need to inform your physician about any drugs you are taking. The medical history should include hormones (oral contraceptives and estrogen replacement) and even aspirin, vitamins, and herbal medications since these substances can interfere with blood clotting or interact with medications used during surgery and could increase surgical risk.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to a patient that they should have stopped using certain medications or even altered behaviour such as smoking. It is up to the patient to take this responsibility for self education seriously.

To achieve optimal results, doctors recommend that patients take the following precautionary measures:

- Before engaging in strenuous activity or exercise, give yourself 24 hours

- For 4-5 hours after the injections, try not to take a nap or lay down

- Avoid massaging the treated area

- Practice daily facial exercises as directed by your doctor

- Sun block is an absolute must

You want to let the Botox settle, so it is recommended that in the recovery period, you limit your muscle movements as best as you can.

Normally, a Botox treatment should last you between three and six months, depending on the treatment area and the severity of the problems. After those six months, facial lines and wrinkles will start to reappear, though not as prominently as prior to the procedure. Naturally, when this occurs, patients can opt to have their Botox treatment repeated. Repeated Botox procedures will be lasting progressively longer with each treatment. As such, a patient will require fewer procedures to achieve their desired results.
