Have You Been Unintentionally Damaging Your Diet?

By Edythe Jones

Everybody knows that the best foods we can take in are whole grains, lean meats and healthy fats. These ingredients fill us with protein and energy. They keep people nutritionally balanced with minimal calories while we work hard to lose our fat at the gym. Are you aware, however, that a number of the foods you've been thinking are fine for your diet plan could actually be making you retain weight? They could even be keeping you from dropping pounds altogether! Here are some of the foods that might be undermining your diet attempts.

You are not really aided by Sports Drinks. You've probably been thinking that the sports drink is the best way to help your whole body feel much better after a workout. Many doctors agree, though, that if your exercise routine is less than ninety minutes, water is a fine way to do this. Sports drinks could absolutely undermine your diet because they are filled to the brim with sugar, empty calories and artificial colors and flavors. Choose chocolate milk for your drink as a substitute. The sugar in chocolate will help your muscles begin to mend themselves and the calcium in the milk will strengthen your bones.

You do not need protein shakes. Lots of folks are convinced having a protein shake is a good way to curb cravings between meals. The real truth is that if you are already eating a balanced diet all the protein shake does is clog your system with protein. Contrary to popular opinion, protein doesn't get saved as muscle, it gets stored as fat. If you've already consumed your daily allotment of protein that day, your whole body will just keep the extra in your fat cells for later and that won't allow you to drop pounds or inches.

Pre-packaged deli meat isn't as useful to you as you may well think. You probably think that a sandwich that is made out of pre-packaged lean deli meat and whole grain bread is a pretty good lunch. Actually, pre-packaged deli meat has much too many preservatives as well as sodium (one portion contains about a third of the amount of sodium you should eat in a day). This could be especially tricky if you are prone to heart disease. Instead of picking deli meat, select home prepared chicken or other poultry or fresh deli meat that you can get sliced at the deli counter. Sure these selections are more high priced but they are much healthier for you in the long run.

There are plenty of things that we believe are better than others like choosing a whole wheat bagel each morning when the truth is that a bowl of cinnamon sprinkled oatmeal is a much healthier choice. Ask a medical professional which foods are most effective for you and then consume those. If you are careful about what you ingest and treat your body well, losing weight should not be that big of an issue for you!
