Learn How Memphis Chiropractor Helps Alleviate Spinal Pain Beginning With An Evaluation

By Lance Aldinger

Suffering from back pain, especially in the lumbar region, is relatively common in Memphis and across the rest of the nation. Over seven million people turn to chiropractic care for alleviation of that pain. Although all these afflictions are classified under the broad category of back pain, a Memphis chiropractor sees those who have lower back injuries most often.

Approximately one third of these people have pain resulting from a sports-related injury. The injuries of professional athletes are highlighted, but, it is the occasional athletes who are most susceptible to accidents. For one thing, they are out of condition when they participate in a game. Muscle strain or worse can result.

The spinal column consists of 41 vertebrae, nine of which are fused. They encase and protect the delicate spinal cord, which contains complex nerve roots that serve to innervate the entire body. When a hollow bone in the lumbar region is out of place, pressure is exerted on the nerve within and moderate to severe pain will result.

This condition is known as a pinched nerve. In technical chiropractic terminology, it is called a subluxation. This means one or more of the vertebrae is misaligned, or out of place. A series of gentle adjustments can be most effective in moving it back into the correct position.

The first step to alleviating the often excruciating pain is a chiropractic evaluation of the injury. Questions and answers such as how long have you experienced the pain and how severe is it are essential. A physical examination of the spine is revealing and sometimes an x-ray is required.

Following the evaluation, your Memphis chiropractor can schedule one or more adjustments to correct the misalignment. People respond at various rates, however, some relief is often felt after the first few adjustments. The ultimate goal is to return the individual to his or her former level of function, allowing for a return to work and the recreational activities previously enjoyed.
